Choose The Best Furniture For Your Garden

House Outdoor Seating Furniture Garden Home Patio

There is more to it than just tending to your garden in order to make it look wonderful and enticing. A great idea is to consider it another room of the house, and invest in making it a space where you can spend your time. This means that you should implement furniture into your garden. Place a table with some cozy chairs or a sofa, and you’ve got yourself an outdoors part of your home where you can spend your time alone or with your family. In this article, we are going to discuss some of the tips for getting the best furniture for your garden.

Decide on the purpose

The first step is to decide what you want to achieve by implementing the furniture. Are you aiming for a space where you can host dinner parties? Do you want it to be a simple dining area for you and your family? Are you thinking about designing a peaceful spot where you can lay back and read during warm afternoons? Make a list of what you want to do with the space, and this will help you decide what furniture is the most suitable for it.

Getting shelter and shade

What you probably want is to create a space that is sheltered from the hot summer sun or rainy and windy weather. There are two choices that you can go for. The first is a pergola, which will provide you with just enough shade, but won’t be able to offer much protection against the rain. The other option is a summerhouse or a gazebo, which is bound to make your space dry, but might feel more like you are on the inside instead of in your garden.

Easily maintained furniture

Make sure that you get furniture that requires little maintenance, in order to be able to enjoy your garden space rather than take care of it most of the time. The general case with cedar, metal, teak and wicker pieces is that they are resistant to different kinds of weather. Go for these materials if you really want to enjoy great furniture that will look great for a long time.

Go for high-quality

Of course, it is also very important that you adhere to the old saying that you get what you pay for. For example, cheap plastic resin tables and chairs may look great in the shop, but the fact is that they will keep this look for a few years, until they become fragile and lose the color. A number of wicker and wood products that go for a cheap price have the same problem. You need to be careful when you shop and read reviews before you make the decision to buy.

Apply smart coloring

You should keep in mind that when getting the furniture for your garden, you don’t have to be restricted to the natural hues of wood, metal and wicker. You can invest in high-quality colorful finishes in order to get the best looks out of your patio furniture. Next to that, you can get creative by adding boldly colored cushions and accessories.

Go for comfort

Aesthetics might be important, but an essential aspect of your garden furniture is comfort. Piece made out of metal or wood are bound to last long, but for them to truly be comfortable, you need to add some soft cushions made out of plush. Pancake cushions are a bad choice, since they provide you with what you are looking for. Get big and light ones that will make your furniture truly usable. Polyester filler is an essential component. A light and elastic filler easily dries after exposure to moisture.

Think about shape and size

The shape and size of your furniture matters for any room in your home. Therefore, it’s no different for your garden. If you want to make it into a dining space, you must pay attention to the size of the dining table. Make sure that it doesn’t take control of all of the space, and that people can move around easily. According to the professionals at landscape design Sydney, the furniture pieces have to be just the right size so that they make the space open enough and that it remains functional.

In summation

When you choose the furniture for your garden, you must decide what purpose the space should serve. It is important that you go for high-quality and comfort, but also for furniture that doesn’t require high-maintenance. The shape and size also matters, so that the space remains functional.

How to Keep Your Outdoor Furniture Looking New

Your outdoor furniture can take a hiding. From bearing the heat of the sun to surviving heavy rains and maybe even hailstorms now and again. High quality, sturdy outdoor furniture will go the distance but requires some regular TLC to keep it looking its best.

Outdoor fabrics and finishes for designer furniture have improved in durability over recent years but an annual clean will ensure your garden furniture will look immaculate, year round.

Caring for cushions and upholstery

Today’s outdoor fabrics are weatherproof and durable but can get grimy and lose their bright and vibrant colours overtime. However, caring for your outdoor cushions and upholstered outdoor sofas is not a huge chore.

To clean modern outdoor fabric, dust off any surface dirt then dilute mild detergent in water and apply to the upholstery using a sponge or soft bristle brush. Rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove any detergent residue and allow it to dry in sunlight. Once dry, your cushions and upholstery should look as good as new.

Canvas cushion covers can be removed and washed in the washing machine. If the covers aren’t removable, give the canvas a scrub with soapy water and a soft bristle brush then rinse well. This method can also be used on items like deck chairs and canvas awnings to remove tough stains such as bird droppings.

Caring for wicker furniture

If your wicker furniture is in good condition, give it a quick vacuum and wipe with a cloth soaked in a mild detergent solution. Use a bristle brush to remove any really stubborn grime then wipe over with a cloth soaked in plain water to rinse off any suds.

Vintage wicker furniture can also be given a new lease on life with a quick coat of spray paint.

Over time, wicker can dry out and split. To prevent this happening, once or twice a year mist it with a garden hose on a sunny, breezy day then dry your wicker furniture in a shady place.

Maintaining teak furniture

If your teak furniture gets dirty and grimy it can tend to mildew. Once a year, give your teak furniture a good, thorough scrub with an equal dilution of mild detergent and water using plenty of elbow grease and a bristle brush. This should prevent the teak from rotting.

Regular oiling can keep your teak furniture looking great and prevent the grain from drying out and cracking. However, do be careful with the product you use. It’s best to get a product recommendation from the manufacturer or retailer at the time of purchasing your teak furniture.

Caring for metal garden furniture

Metal furniture intended for outdoor use generally has a protective coating to prevent rust, but this finish can wear over time.

Check over any outdoor metal furniture carefully each spring. If you spot any signs of bubbling varnish or the appearance of rust, use sandpaper on the area that shows damage then apply a rust prevention product. Finally, give the entire piece a new coat of paint or varnish.

Bird droppings should be removed from outdoor metal furniture as soon as possible. They are acidic and can damage the furniture’s protective finish. Inspect your garden furniture regularly and remove any bird droppings straight away using a soft cloth and mild detergent.

Designer furniture is all the rage for today’s sophisticated outdoor living and entertaining areas. Purchase the best quality outdoor furniture you can, care for it regularly, and it will continue to look brand new for many years to come.

Furniture – How much do people spend?

For those items that we don’t buy very often it can be difficult to know whether the prices you see are reasonable or not.  I came across a recent survey on furniture buying and want to pass along the information.

The information below is about outdoor chat groups: a couple of chairs & table. chat_group

This survey divides buying households into 3 groups: Lower income (making less than $50,000/year), Middle income ($50,000 to $100,000) and the Affluent (above $100,000).  The stats below come from 2014.

First, outdoor furniture is becoming increasingly popular.  For the affluent, 63% have an outdoor room and 22% are making one.

In 2014, 33% of the buyers of conversation/chat groups were lower income, 48% were middle income and 19% were affluent.  In my opinion, this is probably representative of what homes are being bought, since we tend to buy furniture when we move into a new domicile.

Despite it being only 19% of the market, 65% of the dollars spent on conversation/chat groups were made up of purchases by the affluent, 14% by the middle income & 21% by the lower income.  Of course, the reason more of the market is made up of the affluent is because they spend more.

For the merely affluent, they spend a median (that’s the mid point between low & high) of $1500 on a chat group while those making more than $150,000/year spend a median of $2,325.  For those making less than $100,000, they spend a median of $225.  That means that the ultra-affluent spend more than 10x on their outdoor furniture than the rest of us.

Selecting The Right Patio Furniture Cushions

The right patio furniture cushions can fill you with a sense of luxurious living. Whether you have a wrought iron, wicker, teak or plastic furniture set, having the right cushions can make or break your backyard or sunroom. Having durable, appealing fabric on the outside should be matched with long-lasting cushions.

5 25 3The key to long-lasting patio furniture cushions is not just the density or quality of the foam itself, but the drainable quality of it. Cushions that will inevitably sit in the rain from time to time should have an open cell structure. This guarantees that the water passes through the cushion and out through the fabric. Getting cushions that do not trap the water inside of them will outlast ones that end up with internal moisture which could lead to rotting. Quality cushions are often made of layers of polyester fill which is also called polyfill.

Another way to keep the moisture out is to have the right fabric on the outside. Except for wrapping your cushions in plain old garbage bags, which no one will, you might be able to get some other fabrics that will be equally successful in keeping the water out and the firmness in. Many of the fabrics used for patio furniture cushions are made to feel like plush cotton. Look for solution-dyed acrylic to get long-lasting cushions for your outdoor set. This kind of fabric is specifically designed to be all-weather, comfortable and soft. The sun can often play a mischievous role on outdoor cushions. A Teflon coating is often applied at the factory to keep the colors of patio furniture cushions vibrant and alive.5 25 1

Your cushions should also include some Dacron wrap. This adds the extra fullness and shape to cushions which makes them look even more appealing for some spring, summer or fall lounging. Rather than having a simple, square piece of foam inside your cushion, you have a piece that has been wrapped completely in the soft edges of Dacron. Some cushions will not say whether they include this extra layer, but you can often tell just by looking at the shape.

5 25 2Knowing the inside and out of picking out patio furniture cushions can help you find the ones that will hopefully last for years. Picking out the patterns of your cushions will be the fun part. Stripes are always festive for the outdoors, with floral patterns taking a close lead. Of course, there is nothing wrong with going with solid colors. If you have an intricate wrought iron set, or many pieces, in a setting with tons of flowers and plants, then going for a simple cushion will let the eyes enjoy the scenery a little more. Luckily, most patio cushions are designed to fit any set, whether it is teak, iron or plastic resin, so one does not have to worry that they have found the perfect pattern, but not know if it will fit. Look for quality polyfills, UV-resistant coatings and comfortable softness and you can have a complete sanctuary for outside of your home.

Some Great Ideas for Spring Patio Furniture

As days grow longer and warmer, more and more time is spent out on the patio. A comfortable patio environment will make sitting outdoors more enjoyable for all seasons. Here are some ways to set up a patio and a few ideas to make a patio charming and beautiful. And whether on a budget or shopping higher end there are endless possibilities.

Choosing patio furniture depends on the size of the patio area. For smaller areas, café tables are a great idea. Bar tables and patio bar chairs are another great way to save space and have a comfortable patio. Add a few potted plants and other favorite outdoor design elements like wind chimes and birdhouses for a perfectly quaint patio.

For larger patio settings there are many great options. In a covered patio choose a few chairs of differing styles, including comfortable chairs as well as a couple chaise lounges for lying down and relaxing. Another great idea is a hammock. They can be hung from the corner of the patio and covered with blankets and pillows to make it a truly comfortable outdoor seating.

For an outdoor patio without cover there are many great choices for patio umbrellas that will coordinate with any outdoor patio theme. Chaise lounges on an uncovered patio are great too for soaking up some sun. An outdoor grill can be incorporated into the outdoor patio and will provide hours of outdoor entertaining.

There are many types of patio furniture to choose from. It depends mostly on personal preference and how the furniture will be used. If the patio furniture will be used frequently some great ideas are resin or aluminum patio furniture. For less durable but still elegant options, wicker patio furniture is a great option. Aluminum cushion patio furniture works well with frequently use and still is extremely comfortable.
