How to Use a Color Wheel for Decorating

Interior designing is a tough job. If you don’t have the innate ability to combine colors together so the end result will come out exceptionally beautiful, then it’s probably best to hire a decorating service elsewhere. But thanks to Issac Newton’s virtuoso; this amazing tool he created way back 1666 is now commonly used today to help with color mixtures that’ll surely bring back memories or just simply – soothe you.

Introducing the ingenious color wheel: A useful circular tool that comprises of 12 basic colors and creates a variant of unique colors when combined. But the question is, why is it shaped like a wheel? Why not rectangular? Or triangular? Or octagonal? Well, the theory, according to artists, is that an exceptional mishmash of colors is created when you rely on precise proportions hence, a perfect circle.

What are the Basic Colors of a Color Wheel?

Like what we learned in school there are three basic colors and they are red, yellow, and blue. These are called the primary colors. Do you want to know an amazing fact? You can mix all the colors in the world but you’re still never going to be able to get these three precise colors out of that mixture! But what’s more amazing though is that when these colors are mixed; you get green, orange, and purple which are called the secondary colors. For instance, orange is by mixing red and yellow, green is from blending yellow and blue, and purple is the by-product of red and blue. The last one is tertiary colors which are produced when infusing the primary and secondary colors. This is where it gets more intense like blending blue and green results in teal (my favorite), or amber after mixing yellow and orange; the possibilities are endless!

How to Choose a Color for Decorating?

Apparently, there is a 60-30-10 rule in color combination. It should have a dominant color of about 60 percent, another secondary tone of 30 percent, and lastly, 10 percent should be a contrasting touch. But to do this, you can depend on warm and cool colors which the color wheel is divided into.

Warm colors are when you combine orange, red, yellow, and other synonymous colors. These colors resonate brightness like the sun. These colors are perfect for making huge rooms have a somewhat comforting feel.

Cool colors, on the other hand, represent the sky and the ocean, and tend to draw your perception of depth back ergo, they’re great for making smaller rooms seem bigger.

What are the Other Color Schemes?

If you want to take your designing to the next level, you can take a look at these four kinds of color schemes that will help you in choosing the perfect combination.

A monochromatic color scheme is straight up choosing one hue and extending using its varying shades. An analogous color scheme is mixing two or three colors that are sitting beside each other on the wheel. Next is the complementary color scheme which is picked if they’re facing opposite each other. Finally, the triadic color scheme is a mélange of three colors that are equally distributed on the wheel.

Get Inspired: Create a Luxury Backyard Oasis

There is nothing as rewarding as coming home after a rough day and sitting in your backyard having a nice cup of tea or coffee, alone or with your friends and family. To be able to enjoy this experience fully you should have an outdoor area that is warm, cozy, inviting and, why not sprinkled with a dash of luxury? Fortunately for you, this is not as hard to accomplish as you might think. Here are some ideas that will spark your imagination and help you create a luxury backyard oasis.

Choose the furniture

backyard1

Great outdoor furniture combines functionality, aesthetics, and comfort. All it takes to transform a simple patio into a sensory-rich entertaining/dining area is a set of cozy chairs, an accent armchair or a rocking chair, a sofa stocked with ample cushions, a club table, and a dining table. Feel free to go with colorful and elegant options, but be aware that nature may not be kind to your furniture, so be sure to opt for weather-resistant materials and fabrics, such as teak, cedar, wicker and outdoor textiles.

Soak in

backyard2

There is no such thing as a luxury backyard oasis without a pool. Now, you have various options when it comes to installing pools. It can be a completely natural pool, a fish tank style pool, etc. If you don’t have enough room for a large swimming pool, don’t worry. You can get something even better – a stunning outdoor spa pool, which doesn’t have to be big, but it still combines the perks of a pool and a hot tub.

Create cover

The best thing about a backyard sanctuary is that it provides you with a combination of nature and privacy. That wouldn’t be possible if everyone were allowed to peek inside. And the sunlight going directly to your eyes wouldn’t be pleasant either. To shield yourself from these inconveniences you can use fabrics and drapes to hide your porch, grapevine trails for open areas, plant bushes, trees, and shrubs, build a pergola, etc.

Start a fire

backyard3

An outdoor fire pit or fireplace will serve as a perfect focal point for your entire backyard, and it will be a great and warm gathering place. Just imagine hearing the cracking of the fire while you are relaxing in your rocking chair. Depending on your budget and your preference, you can decide for a portable fireplace, a brick or stone fire pit, a copper bowl fire pit, a tabletop fireplace, or some of the many other options.

Whimsical landscaping

For a successful landscape project, you need to work around a focal point. In case of a luxurious oasis, that center can be the fire pit, the pool, garden statues and ornaments, or the sitting area. Focus on scale and pacing to create a well pulled-together look. Work on variations in size, color, and shape. Tall plants can be planted in the back of flowerbeds, against a wall, or along a path. Create patterns and a sense of cohesion by repeating some plants, shapes or colors throughout the yard.

All lit up

backyard4

A good backyard retreat allows you to rest any time of the day. The best backyard retreat is even more beautiful when the sun goes down. This happens because outdoor lights produce a magical ambiance that can’t be compared to anything. When deciding on your backyard lighting, you can get creative. You can choose to have a Victorian chandelier hanging on your porch, or Chinese lanterns on the tree branches. If you want to be energy-efficient, you can add solar lamps. These days, string lights are a very popular solution for backyards, and since they usually don’t provide very powerful illumination, you can complement them with candles.

Finally, you can enhance the already glamorous appearance of your backyard by adding stylish accessories. These can come in the form of vases, flower pots, mirrors, artworks and other trinkets that reflect your personality.

Painting Used Furniture

If you think of painted furniture as a scraped-up old chair you pick up at the flea market to put in the laundry room, think again. Painting used furniture has many benefits. It is great if you want to update your home on a budget, while keeping it stylish and is the most eco-friendly way to do so. It also allows you to get creative and add your own personality to your home. Consider it a work of art. Did you ever think of painted furniture as art? You don’t need to be especially artistically gifted to successfully create a conversation starter as well as a true work of art.

painting furniture 1Before you get started, take a mental survey of what it is that you want.

What piece of furniture do I want? Where is it going and what will it be used for?

Once you know what piece it is your painting, start thinking about the style of the piece.

What look are you going for?  If you don’t have an idea of the look you’re trying to achieve, then look on the internet for inspiration. Pinterest.com is an awesome site for ideas of all kind and will show you different styles of old furniture and what they look like painted.

Now that you have an idea of the style of the piece you are looking for, you can begin your furniture hunt.painting furniture 2

Start your search on Craigslist. Many people do not see the need for their grandmother’s 1940’s highboy dresser and are selling it for next to nothing. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Flea markets are also a good source but the prices can run a bit high.  Here at Furniture Works, we have a large selection of affordable used wood pieces, such as dressers, nightstands, and hutches. All of which can be repainted to look like a one of a kind designer piece.

The next step is choosing the colors and the design.

Choose a base color; buy some acrylic paint in a can and a good brush. Get a set of small bottles of acrylic paint in several colors at a crafts store and an inexpensive set of little brushes. Paint your furniture item. Acrylic dries quickly, so you’re ready to move on in half an hour.

painting furniture 3Use any colors you fancy. Bright, primary colors are favorites with kids. For your teen daughter, various pastel shades may be just the ticket. If you’ve chosen a dark green as your base color, a burnt orange can provide a nice contrast.

When you’re doing this type of painted furniture project, you can ad lib, painting an appealing shape wherever it pleases you. Maybe you’ll then outline that shape in a contrasting color. Painted furniture can be a kind of pop-art creation. Perhaps you want to paint a vine that drapes gracefully across the chair seat or runs across the table like a runner. How about stripes on the rungs of the chair? Anything goes. A geometric pattern can look very attractive, a la Mondrian.  If you are not so good with painting freehand, then create or download an attractive stencil. You can also find painted rollers with patterns on them at hardware stores.

There are some other tricks of the painted furniture trade you’ll want to explore while creating your work of art. Acrylic paints can be diluted with water and layered over another color, a bit like batik. A swath of light blue crossing over a purple area creates a new shade and added dimension. There are clear acrylic gels which you can use to dilute the color while retaining the same body of the full strength paint.  You can also create a cottage chic look by sanding the corners and edges lightly after the paint has dried. Experiment and have fun.painting furniture 4

When you’ve completed this first project, consider the possibilities.  Remember that practice makes perfect so plan ahead and practice your designs and experiment with colors on a piece of paper beforehand. This will ensure that you are satisfied with the piece and will encourage you to keep going. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t look like the pictures. Your piece is unique and it is a one of a kind created by you!

A painted furniture project is one you can put away and pick right back up when it’s convenient to your schedule. I can almost guarantee you’ll be eager to come back and work some more, because it’s a therapeutic and satisfying activity. Be forewarned that painted furniture projects can be addicting (at least, that’s what they say, I prefer the natural wood look), just for the pleasure of creating a little work of art.

Mad Men Furniture for the Perfect Man Cave

A Man Cave is an exciting space to decorate and there are many different ways you can decide to go to get whatever look you want. One of those ways would be to adopt the ‘Mad Men’ appeal. But unlike most of other options, this one requires a little bit more of planning and making sure that you pick the right furniture for your space. To help you with that, here are some tips and furniture that could help you pull off the perfect “Mad Men” look for your man cave.

The Egg Chair

A man cave is nothing without a recliner and the Eames lounge chair is the best for the job. Nothing spells comfort and class better than the Eames Chair with its leather and fine finish. The Ottoman is definitely going to be a great addition that would see your comfort skyrocket and add loads of value to your man cave. If you don’t have the budget for this, you can get a little creative and opt for a replica of the Egg Chair. It might not be a recliner but packs loads of comfort and style and will be a great contrast to your space.

Bar Cart

If you are intent on getting that Mad Men look down to the wire, there is no question that a bar is going to be a big part of your interior design. If your budget and space allows, by all means you can go all out but, a bar cart is usually a creative way of keeping your vodka and scotch visible without breaking the bank. The best thing about Mid-century themed bar carts is that they are as diverse as you would like your alcohol and you would be spoilt for choice getting the one that best fits your décor.

Cater to the guests

A man cave is not complete until ‘The Alphas’ come in, check it out and give it a thumbs up. If they like the place, you can rest assured yours will the new meeting spot and that will mean you’ve got to get extra furniture. The type of furniture you get should coincide with the kinds of activities you guys engage in the most. If you watch a lot of games on TV, a retro leather sofa would be a perfect piece for the man cave or other types of retro furniture as seen on Mad Men. It is comfortable and spacious and it won’t take up all your space so it doesn’t feel cramped.

If you would rather play poker or some friendly gambling, then you could think of more creative options like the Tulip Style Chair. You should not forget that while the furniture has to be functional, its touch of class should not require introduction and the contrast should allow the pieces you choose to be easily visible. That’s how you grab attention and stay ahead of the pack.

The table

The mighty table! You might not even need one but why should you pass on the chance for the perfect Mad Men look. After all, you never know what the future holds. You might not need a table now but, you will definitely need one on the future. You have quite a number of options depending on your preferred look and the intended use for the table. If you are just looking for a place to hold your popcorns while you get the door, something trendy, classy and that screams Mad Men in Caps, the Noguchi Coffee Table would be a perfect fit. If you have kids around and you fear they might break the glass, there is a wooden version of it that is just as attractive and breath-taking.  You can also go for the wide range of tulip style tables on the market but you want to concentrate your energy on the ones that are not high reaching.

Rug

You need a great rug to over some of that floor and give it more of a comfortable feeling. The last thing you want is to have your feet constantly feeling the cold floor. This is the one place that is not going to be a battle. It might be with regards to colour but, shaggy rugs take the day head and shoulder above any other type of rug you can consider. Furthermore, they are quite comfortable with that squishy feel under your feet.

And, there you have it! The perfect Mad Men themed man cave! It is all about blending the perfect mid-century furniture in terms of themes and colours and the picks you have just read about will definitely help you achieve that.

The Steps:

  • First of all, you need to check the edge of your canvas. If it has not finished, you can fold the edge and make stitch across the fold using a sewing machine. Iron the canvas out flat.
  • Draw your preferred design and sketch using the pencil.
  • Color the pattern using the permanent markers.
  • Add a rug pad underneath if you want to put the tapestry on the floor.
  • If you want to hang it on the wall, you need to make hanger or just simply hang it using nails.
  • Notes: although the canvas is washable, the color of the tapestry will fade a little bit.
  1. Feather Wall Hanging

Unleash your inner boho-chic princess with this feather wall hanging. It reminds you of the dream catcher and it can be the alternatives for room decorations.

What You Need:

  1. Batik Dye Wall Hanging

Batik Dye lighten up your room, especially if you choose contrast color. For example, black batik dye will catch your attention if you hang it on your white wall.

What You Need:

  • Liquid Dye
  • Pencil

  • Gloves
  • Paintbrushes (old ones will do)

The Steps:

Small Living Room Decoration Ideas

But what if your house has a rather small living room? Then, you might want to apply these decoration ideas to make space looks bigger and spacious.

  1. Decorate with Mirrors

Decorating your living room with mirrors will not only give the vibe of the spacious area but also a bright room as well. That is because when you place mirrors strategically, it will give an illusion of larger space.

You need to put a mirror in central place to create a focal point. It is best to put the mirror across the window. Why is that so? By putting the mirror across the window, it reflects the view, absorb lights, and gives the illusion of another window.

  1. Draws the Eye Upward

For a room with high ceiling, the way to decorate it is using artwork and decorate the floor. This way, the eyes are drawn upward. You can play with drapes, an aesthetic one if I could say. It is better to go with neutral colors like brown.

Another way is to put art ornaments like painting or handcrafted wood. So, if you enter the room, the attention will shift from the ornaments to the ceiling.

  1. Use Neutral Colors

Neutral colored furniture, walls, or floor makes the room appear bigger. If using off-white or beige, the room seems like expanding automatically because it appears to push back the walls. Neutral colors also have calming attributes. When you enter the living room with neutral colors, you will feel homey instantly.

  1. Choose Furniture Wisely

Are you thinking of shopping furniture for the living room? Do keep these in your mind: pick the furniture with lightweight appearance. Choose the ones with pale or bright colors and those with legs. Do avoid the box types since it consumes more space. Another thing to notice is that when buying tables, you can try the glasses one. As it is transparent and sees through, it will make the area more open.

  1. Small Furniture

Tight space can be adjusted by putting small-scale furniture. It won’t take more spaces than necessary. Sofa with thin arms or armless chairs is the best option out there. It is simple but not overpowering the room.

 Photo Wall Ideas

Next on our lists of ideas are the photo wall ideas. Turning a vacant space in your wall into a gallery wall can be so much fun. You can try decorating the wall based on the frame size of the picture, or to combine and mix several different ideas as well.

  1. Pretty Pink

Do you have any paintings with pink colors? Do you have the paintings with various shades of pink? Then, try to create a pinky gallery. You can display the watercolors painting and add modern touch by giving some gold or silver accents.

  1. Modern Touch

Putting your black and white paintings or printed pictures would never go wrong. As a matter of fact, black and white are everlasting colors, which means that you can always play with it. Add some vase of flowers and now you are ready to show off!

  1. Abstract Gallery

Bored of the same size frame when putting together your pictures? What about trying to get them to a different size? Even though it is abstract, it still catches attention. And that is what you need for displaying and decorating your room.

  1. Pyramid Display

If you are using the shelf to display your pictures, make it so that at the bottom of the shelf is the small sizes pictures. Move up to the second shelf, you can put the bigger ones, and on top of the shelf, you can just put one or two big pictures or paintings.

  1. Bulletin Board Photo Wall

If you are the type of person who does not want to put anything directly into the wall, you might want to consider to collect your pictures on a big bulletin board. Although you have to work twice, it will be worth it.

 Other Decoration Ideas

Besides those ideas above, you might also want to try some of this.

  1. Chalkboard Wall Paint

With chalkboard, you can write anything, basically! You can write motivation words for the day or simply draw something to make your day brighter. Although originally it works best in kitchen or kids room, I think putting it in the living room gives playful atmosphere.

  1. Rack of Wine Corks

If you have wine corks in your home and you do not know what to do with them, why don’t you turn them into the rack? At first, it is intended to become a rack for a necklace, but I think, it fits as jacket holder too.

  1. Floating Bookshelf

A floating bookshelf? Is that a magic? Of course, it is not! But, you can give an illusion of floating books when making this shelf. It is surely fun and fascinating.

  1. Personalized Handwritten Canvas

Write in a blank canvas something personal. Something you would like the world to understand or know about you. Or, you can pour any artistic ideas, even though people won’t likely understand. But hey, all of us got an artist inside, aren’t we?

  1. Mosaic CD Mirror

Turn unusable CD into mosaic CD mirror. Break or smash them into pieces, and paste them on the mirror frame using hot glue. It is unique and majestic.

  1. Gold Flower Pot or Vase

A luxurious look can be created by spraying metallic gold color to a vase or flower pots. It brings grand design to your home!

Conclusions

Those are ideas to decorate your living room. Actually, it is not limited only to the living room, but other rooms as well.  May you grasp the ideas and implement them cheerfully to your home! Happy decorating!
