How to Create a Bold Living Room

The living room is one of the most important spaces in a home. It is where the family spends time with each other and where we receive guests.

It is a space that we highly recommend taking the time to decorate as it ties the home together and reflects the unique collective personality of the inhabitants best.

Express Yourself

It can be quite challenging to express your family’s liveliness, though. It’s easy to go overboard if you’re trying to achieve a bold look, after all. Fortunately, there are tips to give your interior decorating skills more refinement like the ones we are going to share with you below.

Minimalist Bold

For our first trip, we highly recommend going with a minimalist bold approach. It’s a look that uses a minimalist aesthetic as its base style combined with bolder accents like highly stylized light fixtures, oversized works of art, and bold pops of color.

Speaking of color, you have two options. You can go for a brighter palette that exudes warmth and coziness, or you can go for a more dramatic look with deep hues and jewel tones.

Charcoal Grey and Navy Blue

One excellent combination is charcoal grey and navy blue. You can paint your walls grey and use navy blue as an accent color. This combo can tone down patterns as well to create a dark elegant aesthetic if that’s the look you’re going for.

A Statement-Making Wall Paint Treatment

Speaking of patterns, creating an accent wall in an achromatic room is another inspired idea to highlight a diverse pattern or wall paint treatment.

Those who are feeling a little bit more adventurous can opt to highlight the ceiling instead. A wallpapered ceiling is unique, unexpected, and a splendid conversation-starter.

Choose Your Decor Carefully

Once you have decided on the color palette or approach that you will be taking to achieve a bolder look for your living room, we can now move on to the small details that will tie the look together and add your distinct personality.

A Floor-to-Ceiling Gallery Wall

Again, the trick is to achieve the balance between going for it yet still holding (stylish) restraint. You can achieve that kind of impact with an accent wall. As recommended above, you can do so with a statement-making wall treatment.

The results would be permanent, though, or at least until you decide to repaint your wall again. Those who are looking for a more temporary approach can create a gallery wall instead.

Most gallery walls have works of art and photos hung at eye level. But since we want to achieve a bolder effect, we recommend a floor-to-ceiling gallery wall. A maximalist approach where more is more.

You can tone it down with a perfect grid of pictures that either share the same theme or palette. We recommend mixing different sized frames, though, with other decorative elements that won’t look weird hanging from a wall, such as memorabilia, plates, and other types of wall art.

3D Art

You can also hang a 3D piece. What we love about this approach is that it wouldn’t require much attention to detail and resources compared to a floor-to-ceiling gallery wall.

After all, a gallery wall requires numerous pieces that should somehow match together. Like a challenging jigsaw puzzle. On the other hand, choosing a single 3D piece can achieve the same impact, especially if it’s popping out of the wall.

Decorative Cushions

Here’s an idea: you don’t always need to display your artistic taste on walls. There are other ways to add personality and incorporate color for a bolder, more dramatic look. In fact, the easiest way to achieve that is through decorative cushion covers.

Don’t just stick to the usual ethnic or geometric patterns. Instead, we recommend you explore various textures and materials as well. We personally prefer embroidered pieces, especially those that are embroidered and one-of-a-kind.

What’s even great about them is that they are totally switchable. You can collect various covers that go perfectly together and replace your current ones on a whim.

Artisanal Pieces

Since we are already talking about handcrafted pieces, cushion covers are not the only pieces that are one-of-a-kind. We also suggest looking into artisan interior design. It is a style that focuses on craftsmanship and natural materials.

Think of metals, carvings, sculptures, rich woods, and leather just to name a few. Since these works of art do require a considerable investment, we recommend being highly selective with your pieces by choosing those that mean the most to you. This is the heart of a true artisan experience.

Sum up

Achieving a bold look means you need to go big or go home. Remember, though, that this doesn’t equate to a visually cluttered space. Instead, it means being able to display your unique personality through carefully chosen pieces, regardless of how big or how many they are. Happy styling!
